What is Nature-Based Prekindergarten

Nature-based prekindergarten embraces the philosophy of play-based learning, allowing children to learn by experiencing God’s world first hand. Nature-based prekindergarten offers discovery-based learning through play, sensory, gross motor, and fine motor activities and creative expression using the natural world as a catalyst for children’s growth and development. Children build their knowledge through their direct experiences with nature, classroom materials, and their relationships with peers and adults.

Children enrolled in the nature-based program will spend 50-70% of their school day outdoors in their “playscape” classroom. This is every day and any day, rain or shine. Students will be dressed properly for all types of weather and, as the saying goes, “There is no bad weather, just bad weather gear!” In their outdoor classroom environment students will learn to observe the subtle changes in the seasons as they occur as well as participate in regular daily activities such as circle time, singing, and story time. Research supports the benefits of getting children back outdoors. Such benefits include, but are not limited to, reduction of stress and anxiety and also improvement of overall health and wellness.

Students will move back into their traditional classroom for snack and to work on more traditional developmental skills such as handwriting and other small motor activities that are such a critical piece of the kindergarten readiness picture.

Parents will be expected to provide proper “gear” for their child. This includes an all-weather, zip-front jumpsuit ($40-$65). This jumpsuit is worn when necessary to cover clothing.Parents are able to choose from a variety of available brands. During the winter months, children will also need a snowsuit, hat, and waterproof gloves. Parents must also purchase “croc” style shoes for their child and a pair of waterproof, slip-on boots.
